The profession of the archaeologist

The laboratory offers a concrete and immediate approach with an archaeological dig and the emotions of discovering finds. After a brief introduction regarding the manner of identification of an archaeological site through the use of so called “preliminary probes”, the method of organising an excavation campaign, excavation techniques and tools of the trade of an archaeologist are illustrated. A simulation of an excavation is then undertaken. With brushes and floats, a layer of earth is removed, to show the archaeological remains. Finally the business of graphic documenting, photographing and analysis of the discovered materials is carried out.
